Dunga começou a montar seu exército para tentar o hexacampeonato com um pacto entre ele e seus primeiros comandados, na Noruega, antes do 1 x 1 com os donos da casa, jogo que marcou sua estréia como técnico da seleção — e na profissão —, em agosto de 2006. “Ele disse, na primeira conversa com a gente: ‘Quem for convocado, se dedicar nos treinos e jogar com amor pela seleção, vai voltar sempre, mesmo que não esteja bem em seu clube’”, diz o goleiro reserva Gomes.
Em vez de olharem desconfiados para o ex-jogador, quase todos os atletas acreditaram na promessa, cumprida a cada convocação. E foram se rendendo ao chefe. “Hoje, todos os jogadores que estão no grupo abraçaram a causa do Dunga”, diz o volante Felipe Melo, resumindo o espírito do time.
Ao assegurar a vaga na África, Dunga renovou o pacto com seus soldados. A promessa da vez: quem roeu o osso vai comer o filé. Um técnico leal a quem o ajudou a segurar seu emprego. Essa é uma das atitudes que os jogadores mais valorizam no futebol.
Mas e Adriano? Por que os outros 22 convocados (sem contar Grafite, que assumiu sua
vaga) não se revoltaram com o corte do Imperador? Eles concordaram com o raciocínio do treinador: Adriano não quis comer o filé. Bastava a ele, para ir à Copa, treinar e jogar pelo Flamengo. Seus sumiços no clube da Gávea foram interpretados como uma quebra no pacto.
Conquistado o respeito dos atletas, Dunga obteve deles uma fidelidade canina. A ponto de realizar a proeza de fazer com que eles dessem mais atenção à seleção do que aos clubes europeus, responsáveis por seus salários. A ausência de Luís Fabiano na final da Copa do Rei da Espanha foi um desses casos.
Às vésperas da convocação e da decisão pelo Sevilla, ele sentiu uma fisgada na coxa. Poderia ir para o sacrifício, mas seu agente, Jose Fuentes, entrou em cena. Intermediou uma conversa entre o médico da seleção, José Luiz Runco, e os médicos do clube. Os espanhóis concordaram em tirá-lo do jogo. Os brasileiros explicaram que não teria como ele atuar sem comprometer sua participação na Copa. A justificativa colou.
Kaká também evitou jogar com dores pelo Real Madrid, apesar de ser criticado por torcedores e jornalistas na Espanha. “Às vezes, um jogador que ficou sem jogar em seu time por causa de contusão chega em melhores condições do que quem estava atuando”, disse Paulo Paixão, preparador físico da seleção no primeiro dia de treinos da equipe nacional, em Curitiba.
MALEÁVEL
O mau humor de Dunga nas entrevistas sugere que ele possa impor suas vontades ao grupo na base da linha-dura. Mas, tirando o dia em que berrou com um funcionário da CBF (ele se demitiu dias depois) na frente de todos os jogadores, durante uma das refeições na Copa das Confederações, são raros os relatos de ataques de fúria do treinador. Pelo contrário: o general Dunga é descrito como hábil negociador. Usou essa habilidade para não ter de proibir os atletas de receberem parentes e amigos na África do Sul.
Teve a ajuda da CBF, que explicou aos convocados que a estadia no país da Copa não seria tão agradável e segura para seus convidados. A entidade não teria como protegê-los. Além disso, as folgas seriam raras, portanto, o tempo para curtir os amigos, escasso. Porém, a entidade se comprometeu a levar dois convidados de cada um caso o time chegue à final.

Durante o Mundial, mesmo se nenhum parente aparecer, reuniões vão acontecer com um convidado considerado ilustre pelos jogadores: o pastor Anselmo Alves, que costuma seguir a seleção bancada pelos atletas evangélicos.
Além de saber negociar, Dunga é um comandante que não tem medo de recuar para evitar perder uma batalha. Antes da convocação final, numa reunião, os jogadores perguntaram quando se apresentariam os atletas que chegassem à final da Liga dos Campeões da Europa. De acordo com a assessoria de imprensa da CBF, a resposta foi que eles teriam no máximo três dias de folga.
Até o início da preparação, em Curitiba, a CBF deixou aberta a possibilidade de Júlio César, Maicon e Lúcio viajarem para o Brasil no dia seguinte à decisão entre Inter de Milão e Bayern de Munique. Se isso acontecesse, os três teriam menos dias de folga em relação aos seus companheiros, que jogaram num domingo na Europa e se apresentaram numa quinta-feira em Curitiba. Mas Lúcio surpreendeu afirmando minutos depois de conquistar a Liga dos Campeões que não iria ao Paraná para se encontrar com os colegas.
Pediu à comissão técnica e conseguiu que ele e seus companheiros de Inter pudessem se apresentar só na África, evitando desvantagem em relação aos demais jogadores no quesito descanso. Dunga não criou obstáculos e evitou uma crise com o zagueiro. A seleção teve de encontrar o presidente Lula sem seu capitão. Júlio César recusou a folga esticada e apresentou-se um dia antes da viagem para a África.
Ao atender Lúcio, Dunga provavelmente lembrou-se de quando era ele o capitão da seleção, em 1994. À época fez uma reunião com a comissão técnica para cobrar direitos iguais para todos do elenco no Mundial. “Quando houver folga, vale para todo mundo da delegação?”, perguntou então ao técnico Carlos Alberto Parreira, que respondeu positivamente. “Então, por que tem gente da comissão técnica indo passear em dia que não é de folga?” Os jogadores tinham visto Luís Carlos Prima, um dos preparadores físicos da seleção, deixando o hotel. Suas caminhadas foram canceladas após a queixa de Dunga.
O treinador da seleção também cedeu no dia do anúncio da convocação para a Copa, quando apareceu no estúdio do Jornal Nacional para fazer as pazes com a Globo. Ele tinha prometido não conceder entrevistas exclusivas e afirmou que em sua gestão a emissora não teria acesso mais fácil à seleção do que concorrentes.
Mais um recuo aconteceu em Curitiba, quando decidiu abrir as portas do CT do Caju para o público, um dia após ser hostilizado pelos torcedores. O comandante, sem deixar de ser rigoroso, não quer fortalecer a imagem de inflexível que carrega.
CONFIANÇA
Dunga também confia cegamente em seus atletas. Graças a essa confiança, convocou Doni, em vez do gremista Victor.
A Roma diz que Doni perdeu a vaga porque ele se machucou e voltou quando Júlio Sérgio, o substituto brasileiro, estava bem. Dunga tem outra versão. Na entrevista coletiva em que explicou a convocação, afirmou que Doni perdeu a posição na Itália por ter desobedecido ao clube e ter ser apresentado para jogar com a seleção na Inglaterra.
O técnico confiou na palavra do goleiro e reservou a ele uma das três vagas para a posição. Ao perder o lugar em sua volta à Roma, Doni ligou para Dunga e explicou que seu empresário, um italiano com trânsito no clube, investigou o motivo da “barracão”. Ouviu dos dirigentes italianos que foi uma retaliação à decisão do goleiro, que se apresentou ao time nacional contra a vontade da Roma.
Pela versão contada pelo atleta ao treinador, ele estava recuperado de uma lesão nas costas quando foi convocado. Treinou a semana inteira. Num sábado, avisou à comissão técnica que jogaria e em seguida se apresentaria à seleção. O clube, porém, anunciou que não o liberaria e mandou um documento para a CBF afirmando que ele e Juan não iriam porque teriam que fazer tratamento médico. Mas Doni atropelou as ordens de seu time.
A relação de confiança entre Dunga e seu exército agora depende da terceira etapa do pacto, que começa a valer dia 15, na estréia no Mundial, contra a Coréia do Norte. O combinado é que ninguém tem vaga assegurada no time, nem o astro Kaká. Quem estiver mal ou, principalmente, não se empenhar será sacado. E terá de sair sem reclamar.
É o teste definitivo do espírito de seleção alardeado por todos no time nacional. O objetivo é evitar o que aconteceu em 2006, quando medalhões como Ronaldo e Ronaldinho Gaúcho não estavam bem, mas foram mantidos entre os titulares. Os mais novos do grupo discordaram, mas não contestaram o técnico Parreira.
ZONA DE CONFLITO
Para chegar até aqui, Dunga impulsionou seus jogadores com os mesmos combustíveis que ele usa para se motivar: conflitos e superação nas adversidades. O ex-volante seguiu essa receita nos momentos decisivos que já enfrentou no comando da seleção, como na final da Copa América, contra a Argentina.
“Na conversa com a gente, antes do jogo, o Dunga disse que estavam criticando muito nosso time. Ninguém apostava que pudéssemos ganhar. Mas ele deixou claro que éramos vencedores e que estávamos ali pela nossa qualidade. Nosso time entrou mordido, querendo muito a vitória, e ela chegou”, afirmou Juan.
“O Dunga se alimenta de raiva”, diz um dos membros da delegação da seleção. Quem convive com o treinador declara que ele se fortalece nos conflitos com a imprensa. Sentem-se à vontade quando o clima é de atrito. Prepara-se sempre para o confronto com a imprensa, que virou um inimigo imaginário. Seu humor depende das notícias que lê no começo do dia. Vez por outra, muda um plano quando ele é revelado antes da hora pelos jornalistas. E depois faz piada em público com a informação que não se concretizou.
A curta preparação no CT do Caju, em Curitiba, foi nesse clima de confronto. Dunga proibiu a colocação de uma cobertura na área de credenciamento diário da imprensa. No primeiro dia, fila de 40 minutos, sob chuva. No dia seguinte a cobertura foi instalada. Foram diversas as discussões entre repórteres e seguranças. Num dos treinos, Dunga acionou um funcionário da CBF para reclamar que viu jornalistas voltando para a sala de imprensa por um caminho não autorizado, que não era próximo aos gramados.
Como fez na final da Copa América, é costume do treinador falar das críticas da imprensa para os atletas, para inflamá-los. Internamente, os atletas costumam reagir com ironia aos comentários dos jornalistas. Acreditam na máxima de que os repórteres sempre criticam o grupo, mas depois têm que engolir seus títulos. Relação semelhante à que Dunga teve com a imprensa na época de jogador. Virou símbolo do fracasso em 1990 e foi capitão do tetra quatro anos depois.
A semelhança entre líder e liderados não é coincidência. Em três anos e meio, Dunga moldou um grupo de jogadores com perfil semelhante ao seu nos tempos de volante. Discretos fora de campo e aplicados taticamente dentro dele.
O resultado é um exército em que quase não há destaques. “Ele fez isso a partir do momento em que priorizou o coletivo em todos os sentidos, deu oportunidades para todos mostrarem seu valor. Isso se vê no dia a dia, nas decisões e nos atos dele.
Todos nos sentimos importantes e com a noção de que dependemos uns dos outros para vencer”, diz Ramires. O contato com a torcida comprova como quase todos estão no mesmo patamar. Em Curitiba, só Kaká, Robinho e Luís Fabiano tiveram o nome gritado pelos fãs. E Michel Bastos era chamado constantemente de Robinho.
A padronização do time faz parte de mais um plano do técnico, que é fazer tudo o que puder de diferente em relação ao time de 2006, decorado por medalhões mais preocupados com seus projetos pessoais do que com a seleção, na opinião de Dunga. Só quem circular dentro do prédio em que a seleção está concentrada poderá ver outras mudanças significativas.
Ao contrário do que aconteceu em 2006, quando alguns jogadores levavam bebidas para o hotel, desta vez o álcool está proibido. Fumaça de cigarro, só se for no apartamento do chefe da delegação, o presidente do Corinthians, Andrés Sanchez, fumante compulsivo.
Até aqui, habilmente, Dunga conseguiu tudo que quis. Inclusive tirar patrocinadores da CBF de dentro do quartel da seleção brasileira. Moldou um time disciplinado, aplicado, acostumado a enfrentar adversidades e a valorizar o espírito de equipe.
Falta o último passo: transformar seus jogadores em campeões mundiais, como foi o comandante.
