Ele estava internado no hospital Albert Einstein, em São Paulo, desde a noite de quinta-feira, 1º, em razão de uma infecção intestinal causada por bactéria. Sócrates, sua mulher e um amigo passaram mal após um almoço, no restaurante de um hotel em São Paulo. Essa era terceira internação do ex-jogador nos últimos quatro meses.

No sábado, o ex-jogador havia apresentado uma leve melhora, mas o quadro se agravou durante a madrugada. Segundo nota divulgada pela assessoria de imprensa do hospital, Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Sousa Vieira de Oliveira morreu em conseqüência de uma infecção generalizada. O ídolo corintiano estava sedado e respirava por aparelhos.

O corpo de Sócrates será enterrado ainda neste domingo, no cemitério Bom Pastor, em Ribeirão Preto (SP). Não será realizado o velório e o enterro deverá ser feito antes das 17 horas, horário de início da rodada final do Campeonato Brasileiro. O carro levando o caixão com o corpo do ex-jogador deixou São Paulo por volta das 10 horas da manhã em direção à Ribeirão Preto.

Sócrates deixa seis filhos. Foi internado pela primeira vez em 19 de agosto, com uma hemorragia digestiva causada pelo consumo prolongado de álcool. Foram nove dias hospitalizados. Em 5 de setembro, ele voltou a ser internado - desta vez, por mais 17 dias. Com o fígado comprometido por uma cirrose hepática, o ex-atleta - uma das estrelas da seleção brasileira na Copa do Mundo de 1982 - precisava de um transplante para voltar a ter uma vida normal.

Ex-craque de Corinthians e seleção brasileira pode comandar a seleção caribenha.
Um dos maiores jogadores da história do Corinthians e do futebol brasileiro, o ex-craque Sócrates pode voltar a exercer uma função dentro das quatro linhas. Ou melhor, fora delas, mais precisamente no banco de reservas. Segundo o jornal Folha de S.Paulo, ele foi convidado para trabalhar a seleção de Cuba, país pelo qual nutre simpatia histórica e ideológica.

Socialista convicto, Sócrates, de 57 anos, jamais escondeu a admiração e o alinhamento ideológico com Cuba e seu ex-presidente, Fidel Castro. Um dos filhos do ex-jogador foi batizado com o nome do líder cubano, que comandou a ilha até 2006 e transferiu o poder a seu irmão, Raúl Castro.

"No que eu puder ajudar, eu vou ajudar", disse o ex-craque ao jornal. "Cuba terminou a última eliminatória sem perder. Foi desclassificada, mas saiu invicta", defende o possível futuro treinador da seleção caribenha. "O futebol nunca foi o esporte predileto deles. Talvez isso explique seu fraco desempenho."

Sócrates ainda afirmou que a possibilidade de ir para Cuba foi levada a ele por alguns amigos próximos, que o colocarão em contato direto com a diplomacia do país. Ele só tem uma exigência: quer receber o mesmo salário pago a qualquer trabalhador.

"Disso eu não abro mão. Tenho que me sentir como um cubano, receber a mesma cesta básica, as mesmas coisas que eles têm lá, que não é pouca coisa, não", defende o socialista.

Em entrevistas anteriores sobre Cuba, lembra a Folha, Sócrates já declarou que o país é o "símbolo de um sonho" de igualdade entre os cidadãos e oportunidades. Ainda nos tempos de jogador, Sócrates foi um dos líderes do movimento denominado Democracia Corintiana, nos anos 1980, e sempre se engajou em causas políticas e nunca escondeu suas posições.

Socrates, nunca vi você pisar na bola, sempre gostei de seu futebol inteligente e precisamente o seu toque de calcanhar que fez história, passes precisos como se estivesse vendo por trás (sem trocadilho ou outra intenção), mas sinto muitíssimo e desta vez vou discordar integralmente desta sua opinião e vou mais adiante, sua intenção de ajudar os cubanos a jogarem um melhor futebol é louvável, porém falar que lá se tem oportunidades e se recebe uma “cesta básica” farta.....é brincadeira.

Antes de tudo meu camarada, quem recebe uma quantidade de suprimentos medida para sobreviver, não vive bem, quem não pode comprar o que quer e tem vontade, não tem liberdade. Quando se fala em oportunidades, aí sim, você pisou na bola, e feio, Cuba ficou famosa por ter seus intelectuais presos, torturados e até expulsos.

Tenho vários amigos que correram o risco de morrer afogados ou até serem comidos por tubarões para fugir de Cuba, atravessar aquela parte de mar que liga a ilha de Fidel Castro ao continente norte americano. Sem contar que deixaram familiares e que não é permitido sair para visitar ou até mesmo, para deixarem o seu País, eles não tem livre escolha.

Voce não pode querer comparar o Corinthians Paulista com o clube de minha cidade, o Sete de Setembro em Garanhuns, não tem lógica o seu comentário, por favor pegue menos, cara menos.

Sócrates, uma coisa é você viver aqui no Brasil, ser um ídolo, gozar de liberdade para sair e vir quando quiser, fazer compras no supermercado que escolher, comprar o que quiser, beber o que der vontade, enfim meu camarada fiquei triste, imensamente triste com suas palavras.
