Proposta do presidente da Conmebol, Eugenio Figueredo pretende evitar jogos com árbitros pouco qualificados.

A mudança na presidência da Conmebol após a renúncia do paraguaio Nicolás Leoz, suspeito de corrupção, pode gerar alterações na fórmula de disputa da Copa Libertadores do ano que vem. Novo mandatário da confederação, o uruguaio Eugenio Figueredo planeja reduzir drasticamente o número de participantes já na próxima edição do torneio.

De acordo com o presidente, o quadro de árbitros da Conmebol não é qualificado o bastante para manter o padrão nas atuais 138 partidas da competição, o que forçaria a diminuição da Libertadores. Para tanto, a proposta de Figueredo é de que os times, aos moldes da fase preliminar da Copa Sul-Americana, enfrentem adversários do mesmo país, restando apenas o melhor ou os dois melhores de cada Estado.

"Temos que criar um produto mais competitivo e que se pague mais. Precisamos que uma série de equipes se eliminem em seu próprio país, para quando sobrem o melhor ou os dois melhores de cada país, em vez de três ou cinco como temos na atualidade", afirmou o uruguaio, antigo vice-presidente da Conmebol, ao jornal chileno La Tercera.

Atualmente, a Copa Libertadores é disputada por 38 equipes. Na atual edição, seis clubes brasileiros entraram na briga.
