A FIFA definiu nesta quinta-feira quantas vagas cada continente terá na Copa de 2014.

A entidade que dirige o futebol mundial decidiu manter o número já distribuído para a África do Sul-2010, porém haverá uma mudança envolvendo a repescagem. A partir de agora, os confrontos serão definidos por sorteio, segundo o presidente Joseph Blatter.

Com isso, ganhou a proposta da América do Sul, que poderá ter até seis representantes no Mundial a ser disputado no Brasil. Existe a possibilidade, portanto, de que só quatro de suas equipes filiadas fiquem de fora do torneio.

Assim, além do Brasil (país-sede), a Europa (UEFA) contará com 13 representantes, a África (CAF) terá cinco seleções, enquanto América do Sul (CONMEBOL) e Ásia (AFC) terão quatro cada uma, e as Américas do Norte, Central e Caribe (CONCACAF) ficaram com três.

As duas vagas restantes serão decididas na repescagem, que reunirá uma seleção de cada uma das seguintes confederações: Oceania (OFC), CONCACAF, CONMEBOL e AFC.
Para a Copa de 2010, as repescagens tiveram um representante asiático (Bahrein) contra o da Oceania (Nova Zelândia), ao passo que um da CONMEBOL (Uruguai) (CONMEBOL) enfrentou um da CONCACAF (Costa Rica).

Ao todo, 32 países estarão na Copa de 2014. Também participou do evento, em Zurique e transmitido ao vivo pelo site da FIFA, o secretário-geral da entidade, Jérôme Valcke.
