Nélson Rodrigues era um cronista tão perfeito que nem precisava ver o jogo. O resultado da partida, as escaramuças dos jogadores, os esquemas táticos, todas essas bobagens não passavam de detalhes secundários aos olhos do gênio. A Nélson Rodrigues importava a escalação do adjetivo certo na frase certa. Pouco interessava a distribuição de beques ou atacantes no retângulo verde. O relato dessas banalidades é tarefa que cabe aos “idiotas da objetividade” – estes pobres seres que só são capazes de enxergar a rala superfície dos fatos.

A missão que Nélson Rodrigues outorgou a si mesmo era outra: traduzir em palavras a dimensão épica da maior paixão brasileira – o futebol. Para que, então, perder tempo com miudezas? Para que ouvir o narrador descrever o jogo na TV? Para que saber os nomes dos jogadores do Peru? Para que saber se o meio-de-campo do Brasil estava ou não estava inspirado?– Em futebol, o pior cego é o que só vê a bola. A mais sórdida pelada é de uma complexidade shakespeariana.

Gosto muito de "ver" o futebol em suas palavras. Não é preciso ser um estudioso de futebol para saber que Nelson tinha o futebol em suas veias.
