Alguns dos momentos mais marcantes da carreira de Zico foram vividos no Maracanã. O maior ídolo da história do Flamengo conquistou vários títulos e marcou mais gols do que qualquer outro jogador no estádio considerado o templo do futebol brasileiro.
Apesar da inegável ligação sentimental com o estádio, onde entrou pela primeira vez aos 8 anos como torcedor, Zico defendeu a polêmica reforma completa para a Copa do Mundo de 2014, que resultou num Maracanã bem menor e completamente diferente daquele onde o ex-jogador brilhou tantas vezes dentro de campo.
"O estádio está muito bonito, mas por dentro é um outro estádio, totalmente diferente do antigo Maracanã. Do Maracanã mesmo só ficou no mesmo lugar e com a mesma parte de fora. Quem vê o Maracanã por dentro não tem nada a ver com o antigo", disse Zico, que marcou 333 de seus mais de 800 gols no Maracanã, em entrevista à Reuters por telefone.
"Eram mudanças necessárias. Houve tempo de 100 mil, 120 mil torcedores no Maracanã, mas hoje o futebol exige um conforto e uma segurança maiores. A perda da capacidade é uma consequência quando se precisa aumentar a segurança para o próprio torcedor, especialmente num estádio que foi construído há muito tempo", acrescentou.
Zico, de 60 anos, jogou a maior parte da carreira no Flamengo, entre 1967 a 1989, com uma interrupção de 1983 a 1986, tendo o Maracanã como sua casa. Foi lá que ele liderou a equipe que conquistou quatro títulos nacionais entre 1980 e 1987 e venceu a Copa Libertadores de 1981, na chamada "Era Zico".
Nos tempos de Zico, era comum o público passar da casa dos 100 mil torcedores, boa parte concentrada na área chamada de geral --um local onde se via o jogo de pé, abaixo do nível do gramado, com ingressos vendidos a preços baixíssimos.
Mesmo antes da reforma de quase 900 milhões de reais para a Copa do Mundo, o Maracanã já não comportava mais públicos de 100 mil torcedores, e a geral foi extinta na reforma realizada para os Jogos Pan-Americanos de 2007. Agora, a capacidade do estádio caiu novamente, de 90.000 para 78.639.
Comparando o estádio com outras arenas modernas ao redor do mundo, onde Zico esteve nos últimos anos em sua carreira como técnico da seleção japonesa e de times europeus como Fenerbahçe e CSKA Moscou, o ex-jogador exaltou como principal característica do novo estádio a proximidade do torcedor com o campo.
Em vez dos antigos dois anéis da arquibancada, separados do campo por um fosso, o Maracanã agora conta com uma inclinação única de cadeiras do topo do estádio até a beira do campo, o que garantirá 100 por cento de visibilidade do jogo de qualquer lugar, de acordo com os responsáveis pela obra.
"Acho que o ponto principal será a proximidade com o torcedor. Houve um convite do governo para ele assistir à partida, mas Zico decidiu que não irá, pois tem viagem marcada para inaugurar unidades da Escola Zico 10 em Anísio (Piauí) e em Petrolina (Pernambuco).
Recentemente ele visitou o Maracanã acompanhado do astro de Hollywood Tom Cruise, a quem conduziu por um passeio pelo gramado. Por enquanto, tudo parece em ordem para Zico, apesar dos atrasos e de o exterior do estádio ainda estar em obras. Eventuais problemas, segundo ele, só vão aparecer quando o estádio for testado.
"Não vejo nenhum problema, acho que isso vai aparecer quando acontecerem os jogos", afirmou.
Após a inauguração no sábado, o Maracanã terá um segundo evento-teste em maio, também com público reduzido, e finalmente será testado com capacidade máxima no amistoso Brasil x Inglaterra, no dia 2 de junho, antes de servir como uma das sedes da Copa das Confederações, de 15 a 30 de junho.
A Federação de Futebol do Estado Rio de Janeiro (Ferj) manifestou interesse em tentar realizar jogos dos times do Rio, incluindo a final do Campeonato Carioca, nos dias 12 e 19 de maio, no Maracanã, mas por enquanto não há confirmação.
